Course content
1. Myth, religion, philosophy. History of the concept of philosophy. Philosophy as a system. Science and philosophy; philosophy and special sciences. 2. The problem of substance and being; the evolution of ontology and its chief exponents in the history of philosophy. 3. 20th century ontolology: M. Heidegger, N. Hartmann. 4. Knowledge as a philosophical problem. Doxa and epistémé. Knowledge and faith. Critical scepticism. 5. Rationalism and empirism - main problems and exponents. F. Bacon, J. Locke, G. Berkeley, D. Hume. 6. The philosophy of the Enlightenment. 7. 19th century philosophy - an outline of main problems and thinkers. 8. Kierkegaard. Voluntarism: Schopenhauer, Nietzsche. 9. Philosophical positivism: Comte, Spencer, Mill. Evolutionism. 10. 20th century philosophy - an outline of main problems and thinkers. Philosophical problem of time (Husserl, Bergson). 11. Philosophical anthropology (A.Gehlen, H.Plessner, M. Scheler) 12. German Existenzphilosophie and French existentialism 13. Knowledge and science. The linguistic turn. Logical positivism. Wittgenstein. 14. Philosophy and postmodernism. M. Foucault, J.-F. Lyotard, J.Derrida.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to provide an introduction into main philosophical categories and the most important lines of thought in the history of western philosophy. The course will include also a reading of selections from classical philosophical texts.
The student is acquainted with elementary philosophical terminology, with the main periods of the evolution of western philosophy and is able to employ this knowledge in the analysis of philosophical texts. He/She is also able to relate various philosophical thoughts to the problems of contemporary world.

Written examination

Knowledge of the content of lectures, knowledge of basic literature.
