Course content
|
Content of lectures: Introduction to and history of mammal keeping. Keeping of small and large mammals. Veterinary, hygienic a parasitological aspects and rules of keeping. Diseases and their prevention. Veterinary rules and legal standards. Breeding and handling equipment. Problems arising from lack of knowledge of mammalian biology and ethology. Content of practicals: Practicals will include experiments in breeding facilities for small mammals at University of South Bohemia, excursion to rearing facilities of the Zoo's in Plzeň and Praha and an independent work on construction and enrichment of breeding devices.

Learning outcomes
|
Introduction to theoretical and practical basics of keeping of laboratory and wild mammals. Overview of technical and breeding aspects of keeping and problems concerning management of different mammalian taxa.
Based on information provided during the course, a graduate should be able to develop basic management of breeding a particular mammalian species in captivity.

Analysis of student's work activities (technical works), Seminar work
Developing a breeding and management plan for a rare mammalian species including information about its ecology, ethology and reproduction together with a project of breeding and exhibition rooms
