Course content
Content of lectures: Basic terms of morphology and anatomy of insects, importance of characters crucial for phylogenetic studies. Brief overview of historical development of insect classification. Hexapod classes Protura, Collembola and Diplura. Characteristics of Insecta s. str. Apterygots, paleopterous and neopterous lines, extinct paleopterous orders, their relationship to recent Odonata a Ephemeroptera. Polyneopterous groups, orthopteroid and blattoid lines, Dermaptera, Notoptera, Zoraptera. Paraneopterous orders. Endopterygota: Antliophora, Amphiesmenoptera and other lines. In each taxon, we will provide general characteristics and information about phylogenetic relationships, morphology and anatomy of adults and developmental stages, ecological adaptations, life cycles and strategies, fossil records, distribution, economic importance and diversity (subordinate taxa, typical species). Rules of zoological nomenclature will be taught on examples.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Group work
  • Preparation for exam - 40 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 30 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Students will learn contemporary opinions on classification, origin and phylogeny of hexapod arthropods. Characteristics of extant and extinct orders and suborders (in high diverse groups also families) will be given with ephasis on sister groups. Taxonomic methodology, rules of zoological nomenclature and methods of evaluation of plesiomorphies and apomorphies will be overviewed. Ecological and biogeographical characteristics of each taxon will be added.

Prerequisites
English (if foreign students are present)

Assessment methods and criteria
