Course content
Growth ability of pigs, use of growth curves. Prediction of the performance of final hybrids from the current populations. Factory farming and common issues, multisite system, related European directives, critical problems in pig breeding, factors influenceable by human activity. Controlled integration of purchased animals into the production herd. Modern technologies for individual categories of pigs following the welfare principles and corresponding with the requirements, regulations, and norms within the valid EU legislation. Farrowing pens concerning the principles of the welfare of sows and piglets. Microclimate in pig breeding and protection of pigs against thermal stress. Breeding and hybridization in pig breeding, selection and hybridization programs, breeding methods, breeding aspects of selection. Genetics in pig breeding. Methods of yield control, principles, and methods of estimating breeding value. Current situation and trends in pig breeding in the Czech Republic and worldwide. Natural behavior and needs of pigs and their importance for practical breeding.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with current scientific knowledge and trends in pig breeding.
Extensive professional and systematic knowledge in the field of pig breeding. Knowledge of current trends in pig breeding.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, reproduction, genetics, and nutrition in pigs.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination, Seminar work

Each student prepares the assigned seminar paper based on the professional and scientific literary sources. The work needs to be regularly checked by the tutor.
