Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Introduction to the problem, definition of basic terms - definition of SMEs, legislative definition of business, strengths and weaknesses of SMEs, role of SMEs in regional development. 2. Small and medium-sized enterprises in the Czech Republic and EU - business development, SME performance, advantages and disadvantages, push-pull methods of business 3. Establishment of a company in the Czech Republic and other countries - the process of setting up a business, doing business 4. Financial resources for start-ups, acquisition of business premises, selection criteria, business partners and business start-up contracts, partners when setting up a business, criteria for choosing them 5. Business plan - meaning, structure, processing principles, common mistakes. 6. Experience from business practice - practitioner 7. Support of Entrepreneurship in the Czech Republic - Entrepreneurial Institutions in the Czech Republic, Major Chambers of Commerce, Branch Unions, Associations of Business Subjects, Trade Unions, Clusters- 8. Termination of Business - Opportunities to Quit, Pass Business. 9. Intellectual property protection (patents, utility and industrial designs) 10. Start-up - definitions, examples, lean 11. Start-up of franchise business, its advantages and disadvantages for starting entrepreneurs 12. Specifics of family businesses and SMEs 13. Current issues of SMEs - practitioner.

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the specifics of small and medium-sized enterprises and to inform them about problems of setting up and management of small and medium-sized companies.
Students will receive the basic skill for managers in small and middle sized businesses (MSP). They will receive also orientation in new approaches in problems concerning managing these firms and in using supporting programmes of this way of business.

Credit Requirements: attendance - max. 1 absences credit test - pass the test min. to 70% individual seminar work active participation in excursions Exam requirements: test test - pass the test min. to 70% oral exam: knowledge of topics discussed in lectures and exercises accompanied by literature
