Course content
Course Ecology of Still and Running Waters is focused on the structure and function of limnetic ecosystems. It cover up the recent theories and models of abiotic parameters on environment and their influence to organisms. The goal of the course is to gain knowledge on physical and biological relationships in water ecosystems and their interaction with human activities. The courses includes Introduction and history of limnology, physical and chemical parameters of water, periodical cycles in inland water, small and big hydrological cycles, and discharge. Primary production including algae, cyanobacteria and plants are followed by presentation of consumers as zooplankton and fish, and destruents and microbial loop. Food webs and trophic relationships between particular groups are followed by population ecology. Information on flowing water and underground waters are combined with evolutional adaptations of particular organisms. Physiology of water organisms and short introduction to brackish and marine ecosystems is included. Human impact on water ecosystem, eutrophication, climate change and erosion are also the part of the course.
