Course content
Topics: - hydraulic engineering and hydrology, Act No. 254/2001 Coll., on Waters and Amendments to some acts (the Water Act) - watercourses as a natural aspect and as a system of surface water drainage - weirs, weir fascilities (sluice, fish pass, water consumption, etc.) - dams, situation in the Czech Republic, topical issues of dam building, basic dam construction - water management impoundments, small reservoirs (ponds and purpose reservoirs) - hydropower use - tradition and future, hydroelectric power stations, VVE options in the Czech Republic - waterways, water transportation, topical question of using our waterways - operation of hysraulic structures on watercourses and other hydraulic structures, safety and structures in critical situation - river bed stability, technical and nature-friendly arranfements for river bed stability, flood control - watercourse modifications, their revitalization and maintenance - protection of river basins and ladscape water management

Learning outcomes
The course contains basic information on watercourse modifications and hydraulic structures. The course follows up the courses Water regime in landscape and Water management. The foundation is a brief overview of engineer hydrology, hydraulic structures typology and history of river engineering and watercourse modification, including current trends in water management. By completing this course, student acquires knowledge in the issue of hydraulic structures and water management in the context of the Czech Republic. The lectures contain particular topics listed bellow, the seminars contain simple practical assignements demonstrating the methods used in water management focused on particular projects, excursions to selected hydraulic structures, and trips to specialized departments. The issue of wastewater treatment is also covered in the course Waste water treatment and the topics of collecting, treatment, and distribution of drinking water and service water are covered in the course Water treatment technologies and public water supply.
The student is well versed in problems of water structures. He knows conceptual documents and information systems in water management, he can use technical standards and legislation in water management. He has basic knowledge of design and operation of hydroelectric power plants, erosion control structures and measures, dams of streams and ravines, small water reservoirs including ponds, watercourse modifications including revitalization and renaturation of small watercourses, flood protection structures and measures, weirs and weir reservoirs, dams and reservoirs, waterways and buildings for navigation, buildings for hydropower.

Attendance optional. Sitting an exam is conditioned by passing a credit test.
