Course content
1. Introduction: Change and language development 2. The prehistory of the German language: Indogermanic and Germanic languages 3. The formation of "Althochdeutsch"(approximately 500-1050) 4. Language specifics and differences compared with Germanic language 5. The formation of language awareness in early modern times 6. Phonology and morphology of "Mittelhochdeutsch" (about 1050 -1350) 7. Christianization of the German vocabulary 8. The language of chivalry (courtly) culture 9. The formation of the early "Neuhochdeutsch" (approximately 1350-1650) 10. Language changes 11. Martin Luther and the printing press 12. "Neuhochdeutsch" (from about 1650): linguistic societies (Sprachgesellschaften) and llinguistic scientists 13. Further development of the German language until the 20th. century 14. Learning outcomes
The course aims to acquaint students with the historical dimension of the German language. It deals with the criteria of the periodization of the development of language and the basic tendencies in the field of phonology, flexion, word formation and semantics. Transformations of language in the course of its development will be monitored in the background and in the context of contemporary social changes.
Ability to communicate on level B2+/C1
Prerequisites
German language skills on the level B2+/C1 (CEFR).

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Student performance assessment, Analysis of student's language skills, Seminar work, Interim evaluation

Regular preparation, active presentation of the student at the seminar in the form of oral and written presentation and fulfillment of required tasks on a continuous basis, essay. Written exam. Participation in seminars and related events is obligatory. The course will be taught in German.
