The German historian Günter Osterhammel named the 19th century "Die Verwandlung der Welt"/Transformaion of the world, which lead at its end into the catastrophe of World War I. The period, named by Hobsbawm the "long 19th century", was a time of revolutions in political, social and cultural meanings, reflected in literature like in a mirror. The spectrum from the end of idealism in the works of Heine till the naturalism mirrored in the work of Gerhart Hauptmann is a colourful portrait of a most interesting epoch. Regional rooted literature like Keller, Stifter, Fontane have correspondences with experiments in Vienna, Prague or Berlin, the poles reach from Heimatkunst to Weltliteratur.
The students will be able to understand main processes in social as well as in literary spheres of german speaking countries in 19th century. They will be able to understand the links with the decisive question of "Einheit" during this period for Germany and its neighbors. Furthermore they will get a portrait of music and painting closely connected this time with literature.
