Course content
1) Network Architecture Characteristics. 2) Communicating over the Network (Network Structure, Network Types, Function of Protocol in Network Communication, Layers with TCP/IP and OSI Model, Addressing and Naming Schemes). 3) Application Layer Functionality and Protocols (Applications - The Interface Between Human and Data Networks, The Role of Protocols in Supporting Communication, Features, Operation, and Use of TCP/IP Application Layer Services). 4) OSI Transport Layer (Transport Layer Role and Services, Application and Operation of TCP Mechanisms, Managing TCP Sessions, UDP Protocol). 5) OSI Network Layer (Network Layer Protocols and Internet Protocol (IP), Grouping Devices into Networks and Hierarchical Addressing, Fundamentals of Routes, Next Hop Addresses and Packet Forwarding). 6) Addressing the Network - IPv4 and IPv6 (IP Addressing Structure, Classify and Define IPv4 Addresses, Assigning Addresses, Determine the network portion of the host address and the role of the subnet mask, Calculating Addresses, Testing the Network Layer). 7) OSI Data Link Layer (Data Link Layer - Accessing the Media, Media Access Control Techniques, Media access control addressing and framing data 8) OSI Physical Layer (Physical Layer Protocols & Services, Physical Layer Signaling and Encoding, Characteristics & Uses of Network Media). 9) Ethernet (Characteristics of Network Media used in Ethernet, Physical and Data Link Features of Ethernet, Function and Characteristics of the Media Access Control Method, Layer 2 addressing and its Impact on Network Operation and Performance, Compare and Contrast the Use of Ethernet Switches versus Hubs in a LAN, Explain the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) process). 10) Planning and Cabling Networks (Basic Network Media Required to Make a LAN Connection, Types of Connections in a LAN, Design an Addressing Scheme for an Inter-network, Importance of Network Designs). 11) Configuring and Testing Network (Role of Internetwork Operating System (IOS), Use Cisco CLI Commands to Perform Basic Router & Switch Configuration and Verification, Select, Apply, and Verify Appropriate Addressing Parameters to a Host, Use Common Utilities to Establish a Relative Performance Baseline for the Network).

Learning outcomes
To acquaint students with basic principles of the computer networks and demonstrate them on the particular ISO/OSI layers.
After successful completion of this course, students will have: - Basic knowledge of network model and principles of network operation. - Basic knowledge of L1 - L7network protocols. - Ability to understand and create network schemes. - To use basic network simulation tools.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the English language at least on intermediate level required.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Successful completion of the final theoretical test to at least 80%, passing the practical part of the exam.
