Course content
1. History of research - personalities and literature. 2. Typological classification of medieval and modern utility ceramics - description. 3. Classification by conservation status. 4. Basic shapes and their parts, description and terminology. 5. Typology of edges, handles and day. 6. Typology of decoration. 7. Technological properties and their classification. 8. Database for sorting and evaluation of utility ceramics. 9. Chronological development of utility ceramics - 13th - early 14th century 10. Chronological development of utility ceramics - 14th - first half of the 15th century 11. Chronological development of utility ceramics - second half of 15th - beginning of 16th century 12. Chronological development of utility ceramics - early modern: 16th - mid 17th century 13. Chronological development of utility ceramics - modern to recent: 17.-20. century 14. Specific products - red painted ceramics, loštice cups, majolica and haban ceramics, stoneware.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Projection, Practical training
  • Semestral paper - 10 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Summary of medieval and modern pottery manufacture based on comparation of written, iconographical, material and ethnical origins.
Students gain comprehensive information about historical pottery, about its users, technologies and craft positions in social structure. They come to meet material findings, its original functions and classifying methodology and evaluation in a medieval and postmedival archeology branch. They apply knowledge in archeology, monument preservation, museum, science and education.
Prerequisites
The knowledge acquired during bachelor study of Archaeology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Test, Seminar work

Written test, compulsory attendance at seminars 80% - condition for obtaining credit is preparation and presentation of seminar paper and active participation in discussions.
