Course content
1. History of glassmaking from the beginning of history to the modern period. 2. Iconographic and ethnographic sources. 3. Chemical and physical properties of glass, types of glass and glass techniques from antiquity to modern times 4. Flat glass - method of production and its use from antiquity to modern times 5. Archaeological researches of glassworks in the world and in Europe 6. Archaeological researches of glassworks in the Czech Republic with emphasis on the state of knowledge in the South Bohemian region. 7. European utility glass: 12th - early 14th century. 8. European utility glass: 14th - 15th century 9. European utility glass: 16th - 17th century 10. Prehistoric and early medieval glass in the Czech Republic 11. Glass of the High and Late Middle Ages in the Czech Republic 12. Early modern glass in the Czech Republic 13. Prehistoric, medieval and modern glass from South Bohemia 14. Basic overview of specific topics of postmedieval archeology.

  • Semestral paper - 10 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Summary of medieval and modern glass manufacture based on comparation of written, iconographical, material and ethnical origins.
Students gain comprehensive information about historical glass, about its users, technologies and craft positions in social structure. They come to meet material findings, its original functions and classifying methodology and evaluation in a medieval and postmedival archeology branch. They apply knowledge in archeology, monument preservation, museum, science and education.
Prerequisites
The knowledge acquired during bachelor study of Archaeology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Seminar work

Written exam I-II; compulsory attendance at seminars 80% - preparation and presentation of seminar work, active participation in discussions.
