Course content
1. Basic terminology: prehistory, protohistory, Middle Ages, archaeology, archaeological culture, etc. 2. Basic literature on the field: main syntheses and basic studies in the Czech Republic and in Europe. 3. Archaeological journals in the Czech Republic and in Europe. 4. Division of archaeology: according to chronological focus, methods used, type of monuments examined, etc. Borderline archaeological disciplines and related scientific fields. 5. Archaeological sources and their classification. Immovable artifacts - field monuments. 6. Archaeological movable sources and their classification. 7. Raw materials used for artifacts in prehistory and the early Middle Ages. 8. Basics of archaeological methodology. Field research and research, museological processing, record systems (Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic, Museion, etc.). 9. Methods of relative and absolute chronology in archaeology. Results from archaeological research, presentation of archaeology to the public. Archaeological open-air museums. 10. Periodization of prehistory and the Middle Ages. 11. Overview of the history of archaeology in Europe, the Czech lands and southern Bohemia in the 19th century (the beginnings of the field, the period of romantic archaeology, the positivist paradigm). 12. Overview of the history of archaeology in Europe, the Czech lands and southern Bohemia in the 20th century (the cultural-historical paradigm, processualism and post-processualism). 13. The current organization of archaeology in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with the basics of archaeological theory and methodology. In lectures, they will gain an overview of basic literature, archaeological terminology, archaeological sources and their classification, archaeological methodology, as well as the history of the archaeology and the current organization of archaeology in the Czech Republic. In seminars, they will become familiar with the process of writing a professional text, the method of citations, etc., which they will try out on a practical example of writing a short professional text.
The student will acquire basic information about archaeology, its classification, methods and history of the field, as well as the current organization of archaeology in the Czech Republic. He/she will demonstrate his/her competence in the following ways: - The student will write a short professional text based on the acquired skills. - The student will define the meaning of basic archaeological terms. - The student will describe archaeological sources and their classification. - The student will characterize individual methodological procedures of archaeological work. - The student will describe individual stages of the development of the field of archaeology and its current organization.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of history within the scope of the secondary school curriculum.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination, Student performance assessment, Seminar work

Written examination, active participation in discussions during the course; continuous updating of knowledge about the literature and topics discussed, preparation and presentation of a seminar paper, 80% attendance.
