Course content
|
1. Definition and periodization of Middle Ages, history of the research, compulsory literature. 2. Settlement traditions of early Middle Ages, changes of the mediaeval society (dualism and pluralism of the power). 3. Economical relations at the beginning of top Middle Ages, colonization and its consequences, demographic and settlement relations in 13th - 15th centuries, borders of mediaeval economical system. 4. Types of seats and settlements in top and late Middle Ages, overview and compulsory literature. 5. Castles (royal and aristocratic). 6. Seats of lower aristocrats (little castles, fortresses, farmyard). 7. Villages. 8. Monasteries. 9. Towns (foundation, creation, law and residential arrangement). 10. Types of mediaeval towns (royal, liege, failure foundation). 11. Life in mediaeval towns (crafts and craftsmen as a specific component of mediaeval town organism). 12. Organisation and protection of craft production in Middle Ages. 13. Structure of mediaeval production (food, cloth-producing, constructional, metal-working crafts. 14. Production in medieval localities (black crafts, archaeological examples).

Learning outcomes
|
Economic and social changes at the transition of the early and high Middle Ages, the development of medieval society, types of settlements and the most important archaeol. sites; history of research; structure of archeol. workplaces in the Czech Republic.
A student obtains overview of creation and structure of mediaeval society and its settlements from the view of history and archaeology as an introduction to the following course "History of material culture of Middle Ages I-III". The knowledge will be used in subjects of archaeology, history and pedagogy.

Written examination, Seminar work
Comprehensive written exam from UAR I-II, compulsory attendance at seminars 80%, condition for obtaining credit is preparation and presentation of seminar paper.
