Course content
1. Atomic structure and the periodic table of elements 2. Chemical nomenclature, balancing equations 3. States of matter: gases, liquids, solids. 4. Chemical bonds and weak bonds 5. Solutions - chemistry and physical properties (solubility, solutions of acids and bases, buffer solutions) 6. Solutions - colligative properties 7. Chemical kinetics, mechanisms of reactions 8. Thermodynamics 9. Electrochemistry 10. Methods I: Chromatography, Spectrophotometry 11. Methods II: Potentiometry, Electrophoresis

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Demonstration

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students of the study programme Bioinformatics into fundamentals of general chemistry. The course also provides an overview of principles of basic chemical methods used in biological research.
Students master fundamental principles of general chemistry, are able to apply them on simple chemical problems (calculation, derivation). Students are introduced into principles of main chemical methods used in biological research.

no special requirements - high school chemistry knoledge is expected

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

To pass the course, a student must obtain at least 50% of points in the final exam.
