Course content |
Content of lectures: The lectures are focused on fundamental information about the following topics: - some basic deffinitiones (substance and mixtures, physical and chemical properties, units of measurements atc.), - basic concepts of atoms, molecules, ions, - molecular structure and modern theories of covalent bonding, - intermolecular forces, their effect in biological systems, - physical and chemical properties of substances, colligative properties, phase diagrams, - interaction of electromagnetic radiation with molecules, methods based on these interaction (UV, VIS, IR, NMR, MRI, CT, PET, fluorescence methods) - thermodynamics (chemical equilibrium, spontaneus processes, changes of state functions), - acid-base equlibia, buffer solutions, - electrochemistry, spontaneity of redox reactions, potentiometry, conductometric - chemical kinetics (rate laws, relation between reactant concentration and time, temperature dependence of rate constants, reaction mechanisms, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, enzyme catalysis, - properties of membranes, Donnan potentials, - colloids - optical and kinetic properties. - adsorption - desorption equilibria, chromatography separation methods, - electrophoresis - a method for biological molecules separation

Learning activities and teaching methods |
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Demonstration
|
Learning outcomes |
To provide fundamental knowledge in parts of physical chemistry that are mostly connected with biology.
Students understand principles of general chemisry and fundamentals of physical chemistry. Students are able to apply the principles to solution of simple problems (calculation, derivation). Students understand usage of basic physicochemical principles in selected experimental techniques used in biological and medical applications |
Prerequisites |
no special requirements - basic high-school knowledge of chemistry is expected
|
Assessment methods and criteria |
Combined exam
To pass the examination, 50 % of points must be obtained in a combined (oral-written) examination text. Outline of priniciple points for the exam is to be found on MOODLE. |
