  • Class attendance - 39 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 70 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The course aims at introducing of general biochemistry for students of the Biology bachelor programme. The course provides a broad array of fundamental knowledge of structural and functional biochemistry which are essential for understanding of other subjects in Biology curriculum. In the course framework, biochemistry is given as chemistry of non-binding/non-covalent interactions which take place in biological systems on the level of molecules and cells. Structural and functional properties of the components which play a role in the transmission of energy as well as signals are emphasized.
Basic knowledge in biochemistry. Overview of biological macromolecules and other active substances in the organism including their role and function. The also acquire complex overview on basic metabolic processes and pathways, how they are connected, interact with each other and how they are regulated.
Prerequisites
No prerequisites required. Knowledge of chemistry and biology at a level of secondary school.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Recommended participation on lectures. Continuous study and self study of the subject. During the oral examination, student has to show knowledge from both description and dynamic biochemistry. The overall knowledge of all basic metabolic processes will be required.
