Content of lectures: 1. Special theory of relativity, relativistic mechanics 2. Dual properties of particles and waves 3. Structure of the atom 4. Bohr model of the hydrogen atom 5. Quantum mechanics 6. Quantum theory of the hydrogen atom 7. Multi-electron atoms 8. Atomic and molecular spectra 9. Atomic nucleus 10. Nuclear isotopes, spontaneous and induced radioactivity 11. Radioactive decay, activity 12. Elementary particles 13. Particle accelerators 14. Interaction of particles, particle detectors Content of practicals: Solving of problems with relation to the current lecture

Learning outcomes
Physics of atoms, nuclei and elementary particles and basics of quantum mechanics.
Students acquire basic knowledge of atomic physics and learn to apply it in particular problem solving.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of basics of physics 1-3 and mathematics for physicists.

Combined exam

Two semesters of Mathematics.
