Course content
1. Syntax as a linguistic discipline. 2. Contemporary theoretical frameworks of syntactic analysis. 3. Sentence, utterance, syntagm. 4. Levels of sentence analysis (constituents, sentence elements, valency patterns and frames, information structure). 5. Valency, predication, semantic structure of the sentence. 6. Sentence elements: traditional definitions versus the valency approach. 7. Subject. 8. Direct object and indirect object. 9. Agent complement. 10. Adverbial. 11. Attribute and apposition. 12. Modality and sentence types. 13. Word order (overview), modifications of the canonical sentence structure.

Learning outcomes
The main objective of the course is to present to the students the basis of the syntax of simple clause of the French language from theoretical and practical perspective, confrontation of different approaches to syntactic descriptions. Practice of syntactic phenomena. Comparison of Czech and French syntactic structures. Students will also learn to exploit electronic corpora (Frantext, InterCorp, FrWac).
The student applies various approaches to the syntactic analysis of a simple sentence. The student graphically represents the syntactic structure of a sentence. The student identifies the sentence elements of a French sentence. The student uses differently structured sentence constructions to achieve various communicative goals. The student explains the specific features of French sentence structure in comparison with Czech.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of French language at least at the B2 common reference level.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Compulsory assistance. Final test. Min. 66%. Number of attempts: two (one regular and one retake)
