Periodization of the development of the French language. 4. Old French: socio-historical introduction, definition based on diachronic, diatopic, and diastratic parameters. 5. Old French: basic phonetic characteristics. 6. Old French: lexical specifics and dictionaries of Old French. 7. Old French: morphosyntax of nouns, articles, adjectives, and pronouns. 8. Old French: morphosyntax of verbs, invariable parts of speech. 9.-10. Old French: basic syntactic characteristics. 11. Middle French - a period of major structural changes. 12. French of the Renaissance and Classical French: the formation of the standard norm. 13. Modern French.

The aim of the course is to present the development of the French language from Vulgar Latin to the modern period. Individual stages of the development of French are characterized both from a socio-historical perspectivenamely the status of French in a given period in relation to its users, its spread, and domains of useand from a linguistic, diachronic perspective, including the phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical changes that occurred in each stage. Students will become familiar with the principles of the diachronic approach to language study. The changes discussed will be illustrated through the reading of historical texts, and students will also learn how to use diachronic corpora of French (BFM, Frantext).
The student explains the individual stages in the development of the French language. The student understands the main principles underlying the development of the French grammatical system. The student is able to view the grammar and lexicon of contemporary French from a diachronic perspective.
