Learning outcomes
The course introduces the characteristic features of administrative and legal language in contrast to general language. Knowledge is transferred not only through theoretical explanations, but primarily through work with authentic administrative and legal texts (e.g., the constitution, selected laws, and judgments). Emphasis is placed on acquiring specific vocabulary and grammatical peculiarities, but also on the ability to contrastively compare selected texts from the Spanish-speaking environment with similar texts from the source culture. The course reflects selected knowledge from the legal systems of several Spanish-speaking countries (Spain, Argentina, and possibly others). Students will develop basic linguistic and cultural competence in the field of administrative and legal Spanish.
Students will acquire basic linguistic and cultural competence in administrative and legal Spanish. The course is complementary to courses in business Spanish and legal translation. - Students will identify the characteristic features of administrative and legal Spanish in authentic legal texts. - Students will explain the basic differences between administrative or legal language and general language. - Students will compare selected administrative and legal texts from Spanish-speaking countries with similar texts from their own culture in terms of structure, terminology, grammar, and style. - Students will use basic administrative and legal vocabulary in written and oral communication. - Students will apply selected grammatical structures typical of legal language (e.g., passive constructions, polite forms, future subjunctive). - Students will compose simple administrative and legal texts (e.g., official letters, basic contractual clauses) in Spanish. - Students will summarise the content of administrative and legal texts in their own words (in Spanish or, if appropriate, in their own language).
