Course content
1. Literary events after the Spanish Civil War. Consequences of the war: origin of the exile literature. 2. Renaissance of novel in the second half of the forties(Laforet, Cela). 3. Assimilation of Italian Neorealistic and North- American novel´s inspirations (J. Goytisolo, Ferlosio, Matute, Delibes) and French new novel. 4. Transcendental and structuralistic novel (Martín Santos, Benet). 5. Poetry of protest (Otero, Celaya, Hierro) and existencial anxiety (Bousono, Gil de Biedma, Rodríguez). Culturalism (Carnero), experimental poetry. 6. Amusing theatrical genres. Neorealistic and social-critical drama (Buero Vallejo, Sastre ). Surrealistic and absurd drama (Arrabal). 7. Latin-American Post-avant-garde of the forties and fifties :transcendentalism (Lezama Lima), spiritualism (Piedra y Cielo), searching for the way out of existencial anxiety (Paz). 8. Reflexion of avant-garde feats in prose: Surrealism and miraculous reality (Carpentier), oniric vision of the countryside (Rulfo, J. M. Arguedas). 9. Vision of totalitarianism (Asturias), fantastic fiction (Borges, Bioy Casares),the misery of big cities (Arlt, Onetti). 10. Latin-American literature of the sixties. Phenomenon of so-called new Latin-American novel: magic realism (García Márquez). Fantastic prose (Cortázar). 11. Total novel (Sábato, Donoso, Vargas Llosa). Novel of identity (Fuentes); anti-novel (Cortázar). New Baroque (Lezama Lima, Cabrera Infante, R. Arenas). 12. Multiplicity of poetic forms:colloquial poetry and everyday poetry (Benedetti), protest poetry (Cardenal). 13. Poetry of existence (Pizarnik) and exile of uprooting (Peri-Rossi), anti-poetry (N. Parra). 14. New theatre; absurd drama (Pinera).

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to combine lectures with seminars and practical reading of literary texts. It will be focused on the Spanish written literature of the forties to sixties of 20th century.
Knowledge of the Spanish written literatures of the particular period.

No special prerequisites.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination

Compulsory attendance at a seminar (maximum 3 absences allowed), active participation, individual home preparation, required reading. The student shall present a list of required reading books during the exam. The final exam terms will be listed in the relevant exam period according to the schedule of the Faculty of Arts of the JU.
