Course content
Lectures 1st week Structure of atoms, directly and indirectly ionizing radiation, ionizing radiation types. 2nd week Ionizing radiation interactions. 3rd week Ionizing radiation sources, outline of sources of population irradiation. 4th week Quantities and units characterizing ionizing radiation sources. 5th week Equivalent and effective dose. 6th week Biological effects of ionizing radiation. 7th week Deterministic and stochastic effects of ionizing radiation. 8th week Ionizing radiation effects on the human organisms. 9th week Concept of the radiation protection, irradiation from different sources. 10th week Protection from ionizing radiation - activities and interventions. 11th week Principles of the radiation protection. 12th week Dose limit and regulation of irradiation. 13th week Monitoring of employees and environment. 14th week Radiation monitoring network. Tutorials/practical exercises 1st week Decay series, decay law, half-life. 2nd week Natural irradiation, radon programme. 3rd week Principle of nuclear power plants. 4th week Principles and types of nuclear weapons. 5th week Dirty bombs. 6th week Radiation accidents and disasters - nuclear power plants. 7th week Radiation disasters and accidents - other facilities. 8th week Zone of emergency planning around nuclear power plants. 9th-10th week Atomic Act. 11th -12th week Legal regulations for the execution of the Atomic Act. 13th week Demonstration and work with selected instrumentation GR-130/135, FH 40G). 14th week International organizations dealing with ionizing radiation problems.

Learning outcomes
The target of the subject is to acquaint students with principles of ionizing radiation physics and concept of the radiation protection in the Czech Republic.
The student will know basic types of ionizing radiation and its effects. He/she will be well informed about basic concepts of the radiation protection and ionizing radiation.
Mastering physics at a level of the secondary school.

Assessment methods and criteria

Basic knowledge in the field of the radiation protection. Presentation on a given theme.
