Course content
Lectures (2 lessons): 1. Introduction to toxicology, definition of the subject, definitions and basic toxicological concepts. 2. Relationships between the chemical structure of the substance and the toxic effect. 3. Distribution and toxicological classification of chemical substances. 4. Methods of experimental toxicology. 5. Toxicokinetics - adsorption and distribution of chemical substances. 6. Toxicokinetics - biotransformation and excretion of chemical substances. 7. Mechanisms of the toxic effect of chemical substances - interaction with biomacromolecules and enzymes. 8. Mechanisms of the toxic effect of chemical substances - interaction with receptors, ion channels and DNA. 9. Clinical manifestations of intoxication, organ toxicity. 10. Clinical manifestations of intoxication, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity. 11. General principles of poisoning therapy, classification of poisonings, methods of eliminating xenobiotics from the body. 12. General principles of poisoning therapy, antidote therapy. Seminars (2 lessons): 1. Health risks of chemical substances, their assessment and management. 2. Toxicity parameters. 3. Selective toxicity. 4. Methods of experimental toxicology. 5. Factors affecting toxicity parameters. 6. Adsorption, distribution, excretion and biotransformation of chemical substances. 7. Inhibitors of enzymes, ion channels and microtubules. 8. DNA modifying substances. 9. ? 10. The effect of chemical substances on the gastrointestinal tract, on the cardiovascular system, on the respiratory system, on the liver and kidneys, on the immune system, on the nervous system. 11. First aid in case of intoxication and non-specific therapy. 12. Specific antidote therapy.

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to apply knowledge of the basics of toxicology during further systematic study of toxicology and other related fields. In selected cases, they will be able to provide first aid for poisoning and recommend the application of known antidotes.
