Course content
1. French structuralism historical introduction. 2. V. Propp's Morphology of fairy tale in the French context. 3. Structural anthropology of Claude Lévi-Strauss. 4. Structural narratology I (Barthes). 5. Structural narratology II (Todorov). 6. Structural narratology III (Greimas, Genette). 7. R. Barthes on the way from structuralism to poststructuralism. 8. J. Kristeva structuralism and semiotics. 9. Foucault's archeology of knowledge. 10. J. Derrida and deconstruction. 11. G. Deleuze and Rhizom 12. P. Ricoeur: structuralism and hermeneutics. 13. (Post) structuralism and (post)analytical philosophy? (Peregrin) 14. (Post) structuralism and (neo)pragmatism? (Shusterman)

Learning outcomes
In the first semester of this seminar the main attention will be paid to reading and interpretation of the texts closely connected with the origin of Czech Structuralism. We will concentrate on the members of Prague Linguistic Circle and authors of Russian Formalist school. The influence of phenomenological investigations upon formation of Czech Structuralism will be also mentioned. The second semester of this seminar will be devoted to analysis of individual aspects of the aesthetic work of Jan Mukařovský; his conception of mutual relations of aesthetic norm, function and value; his conception of aesthetic object; his notion of semantic gesture; and the relations of art to non-art.
Student will acquire knowledge of origin and advance of influential structuralist theories.
Prerequisites
The course presupposes the basic ability of argumentation and basic knowledge of cultural area.
