Course content
The lectures will present basis of mass spectrometry, chromatography, sample preparation and methods for quantitative and qualitative analyses using LC-MS and GC-MS. Students will be introduced to operation of GC-MS and LC-MS, calibration of the systems, method development including tuning MS/MS and optimization of LC-MS method parameters. They will also learn operation and data analysis with software. The course will include small project focused on topic close to dissertation work of the student. Students will prepare samples, analyze and evaluate them under supervision of guarantor and lecturers. There were purchased additional licenses of software for this purpose. The course is planned for 5-7 days of theory/practice + additional five days for work within the project. Data processing and evaluation is expected as students individual work and consultation with course lecturers.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Laboratory, Individual preparation for exam, Individual tutoring
  • Preparation for classes - 44 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 60 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 65 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
This objective aims on orientation of students in analytical methods of organic pollutants in aquatic environmental samples. The objective is established as intensive course, where theory presented in the morning will be exercised in the afternoon in the laboratory at corresponding instrumentation. The course should offer to students to get at basic start level for organic trace analysis for those students who will actively work with LC-MS at both samples analysis or data processing and evaluation only levels.
Advanced or intermediate level in physical and analytical chemistry is expected for completing of the course. Students must be able to work with literature sources including on-line search in databases, mathematically process the data, interpret and critically evaluate the results of software processing. Skills in basic software as MS word, Excel a PowerPoint is essential.
Finished education at MSc level in chemistry or biology/environmental or agriculture studies but with corresponding level of chemistry.
