Course content
|
The course will be focused on elements and compounds belonging to micropollutants category (heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other personal care products). In general part, the groups will be characterised from both toxicological and physical-chemical properties perspectives.The global cycles of elements and transport mechanisms of pollution will be presented too. The hydrosphere will be accented due to students main focus. Relatioships among the sources, stability, transport mechanisms, organism accumulation and effect on organisms will be given in lectures. The part of the lectures will be dedicated to sampling and analytical methods. Data evaluation and analysis methods will be briefly presented too. The excercises will be foćused both theoretically (work with databazes, calculations etc) and practically water sampling, HPLC/MS/MS analysis and data evaluation.

Learning outcomes
|
Understanding to basic chemical processes in compartments of the environment. Understanding to both global and local transport mechanisms of chemicals. Understanding to relation among the structure, behaviour of chemical compounds and their effects on organisms. Introduction to anylytical method of pollutans and methods of data evaluation.
Students will be able to connect skills and knowledge of toxicology, hydochemistry, chemistry and biology for solving problems associated with environment. Students will obtain basic overview on methods of pollutant analysis, data eveluation, data analysis and results presentation.

Prerequisites
|
The knowledge of basic university chemistry - general, physical, organic, hydrochemistry and biochemistry at the level of bachelor graduate at Faculty of Fischeries and Protection of Water.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Combined exam, Development of laboratory protocols
Presence at min. 80% of seminars (excercising). Presence at laboratory (practical) exercising. Written tests ongoing + final credit test - min. 60% success rate. Seminar work - given theme will be worked out and oraly prezented at last seminar.
