Course content
Introduction to ecotoxicology, history of ecotoxicology, basic concepts in toxicology, toxicity, distribution of toxicity tests, acute toxicity tests on the level of cells, tissues, organisms, chronic toxicity tests, sublethal effects (NOEC, LOEC) of pollutants, toxic properties of pollutants, biomarkers, metallothionein, bioaccumulation, bioconcentration, biomagnification, biotransformation and biodegradation. The entry of pollutants into the ecosystem. The system of laboratory toxicological examination.

Learning outcomes
The aim of subject is detailed knowledge the effect of pollutants on the organisms on all trophic levels (bacteria, algae, zooplankton, benthos, crayfish, fish, vegetation, bee, birds). Special attention will be paid on toxicity tests on single species of ecosystem. Single parts of subject will be also evaluation of case of fish kill incident and other organisms.
The main objective of this class is to get an overview and deeper expert knowledge and competences in the field of ecotoxicological assessment of hazardous properties of pollutants on organisms of the ecosystem. At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the concept of ecotoxicology, which is based on the schema: stressors (ie, foreign chemical or physical factors) affects organisms in them and cause harmful effects (biological systems - from stress receptors). Students will be able to explain the effects of pollutants on living organisms in ecosystems. Students can discuss and interpret the general principles of ecotoxicology and will manage the evaluation and use of methodologies in ecotoxicology, which to predict the effects of toxic substances. Students will be able to justify application of ecotoxicology and application of knowledge in practice.

knowledge of basics hydrochemistry and biology

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Requirements for the credit: 1) active presence on labororatory exercises - 100% 2) credit tests - 80% success rate of each test 3) preparation and presentation of two case studies of fish kill incident and other organisms in ecosystem. Requirements for admission to exam: 1) grant of credit
