Course content
Introduction of biological sciences. Taxonomy. Composition of organisms. Introduction of cell biology. Cell morphology. Cell metabolism. Molecular mechanisms of heritability. Structure of chromosomes. Nucleic acids. Phases of cell cycle. Mitosis. Meiosis. Tissues of organisms. Reproduction. Ontogenesis and evolution. Introduction of experimental methods in biology.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Monitoring, Demonstration, Projection, Laboratory
  • Class attendance - 10 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
The course aims on introduction of biological principles and methods. It provides fundamental information in general and molecular biology. Such knowledge is essential for following courses in the fishery study program. The course will be given as oral lectures and practical laboratory work. Practical courses involve the use of experimental methods in biology: tissue sampling, anatomical dissections, principals of microscopy (light, fluorescence, scanning and electron microscopy), determination of histological sections, principals of spectroscopy, etc.
Successful completing of ZBIF will provide essential knowledge of molecular and cell biology needed for following courses.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of high school biology and chemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination

100% attendance in practical sessions, practical test (min. 50%), final examination: test (min. 70%)+ oral exam
