Course content
|
Atomic structure. Chemical bond (covalent, coordinate bond, ionic bond, metallic bond). Weak chemical interactions and its significance for properties of substances. Interaction of electromagnetic radiation with molecules, methods basen on these interactions (UV-VIS spectrophotometry, IR spectrometry, NMT spectroscopy). Gases, liquids, solids - characteristic. Fundamentals of thermodynamics (state functions, chemical equilibrium, spontaneous processes and changes in state functions during these processes). Solutions - solubility, colligative properties. Fundamentals of electrochemistry and principles of selected electrochemical methods - potentiometry, conductometry, polarography. Chemical kinetics - rate law, influence of temperature on reaction rates, 1st and 2nd order reactions, reaction mechanisms, catalysis. Coloids - optical and kinetic properties. Selected separation methods (extraction, chromatography, electrophoresis). Exercises related to the theoretical principles introduced in lectures.

Learning outcomes
|
The course introduces basic principles and concepts of general chemistry at a level suitable for students of the first year in the Chemistry study programme.
Students understand principles of general chemistry and basic principles of physical chemistry. Students are capable to apply these principles on solving simple problems analogous to those covered in lectures and seminaries.

Prerequisites
|
Good knowledge of high school chemistry is expected. A compulsory pre-requisite is the course UCH 107 (Chemical calculations and inorganic nomenclature)
