Course content
Block 1 Environmental Microbiology Lectures: Where do microbes live? Introduction to environmental, biotechnological and medical microbiome Microbial biogeochemistry What element do microbes use as electron donor or acceptors and how does that influence Earth's ecosystems How do we study microbes in the environments State of the art methods in environmental microbiology Microbe-host interactions Microbial association with various higher organisms. The concepts of microbiome, holobiont and symbiosis Block 2 Industrial Microbiology Lectures: Wastewater treatment Aerobic, anaerobic and industrial wastewater treatment processes from a microbial perspective Biodegradation and biotechnological applications From microbial fermentation to genetic engeneering in biotechnology; How can microbes help us get rid of pollutents Block 3 Medical microbiology Lectures: Pathogens and how they operate The infection and pathogenicity of key disease agents The human microbiome The structure and function of the unharmful majority The past, present and future of antimicrobial compounds Why are antimicrobial compounds so effective and why might we be nearing the end of the age of antibiotics

Learning outcomes
This course runs in the last 9 weeks of the summer semester, starting from week 12 or 13. Teach advanced topics in microbiology that are not covered by the basic course Biology of Microorganisms (KBE / 760) Expose the students to state-of-the-art methods in molecular microbiology Expose the students to the central concept of microbiome that emerged from high-throughput sequencing technologies and in turn how this concept changed modern microbiology Expose the students to the role of microorganisms in natural ecosystems, in biotechnology and in modern medicine
knowledge of concepts and methods in molecular microbiology, the role of microorganisms in natural systems (k1), their understanding (k2), the ability to distinguish between various methods (k3) and the ability to evaluate the various methods (k4) and choose a suitable one (k5) and overall to design experiments and methods for the study of microorganisms and their use in real life (k6).
