Course content
Rule and history of the seed production. Cultivars, their structure and stability. Objectives causing the damaging of cultivars. Maintaining of cultivars of self-pollinated crops. Maintaining of cultivars of cross-pollinated crops Maintaining of cultivars of vegetative reproduced crops. Roles of ideotype and modifications for seed production Seed cleaning machinery and cleaning of seed. Process of seed certification - field inspections of crops growing for seeds by the Certifying Authority, regulations and technical norms, categories and levels of seed. Laboratory examination of seed and certification of seed. Utilisation of protein gene markers for the confirmation of varietal identity and purity. Production of artificial seeds. Market with seed in Czech republic and in Europe, price of seed. Testing of varietal identity and purity of model samples of seed.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Semestral paper - 60 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 10 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 20 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 56 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
This module includes the review of methods for reproducing of cultivars of agricultural crops, i.e. maintaining of cultivars, the rule of ideotype and modifications for seed production, process of certification of seed, including law regulations and technical norms, laboratory testing of seed vitality, laboratory testing of seed purity and viability, seed market in CR and in Europe.
Students are able to orientate in the field of seed production
Prerequisites
Standard knowledge of biology and breeding

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Active participation in exercises, protocols from laboratory exercises, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
