Course content
Content of lectures: Introduction to lasers. The laser amplifier, four-level system, three-level system, saturation, bandwidth of saturated amplifiers, phase shift coefficient. Theory of lasers, feedback and losses in the resonator, the output photon flux density, differential equation for the density operator, for the density matrix elements, relaxing members, rate equation for (not) diagonal members, equations of motion for an electric dipole transition. The electric dipole moment. Inversion of energy states. The wave equations of the electromagnetic field. Introduction to nonlinear optics, nonlinear optical susceptibility. General properties of nonlinear optical susceptibility. Reduction of nonlinear optical coefficients. Electromagnetic wave propagation in nonlinear optical medium. Optical phase conjugation. Optical phenomena associated with the nonlinear susceptibility of the 2nd order. The second-harmonic generation, the conditions for effective generation of 2nd harmonics. Sum frequency generation, difference frequency, optical rectification. Parametric generation. The linear electro-optical (Pockels) effect; classical and nonlinear optical description. Photorefractive effect. Two-wave and four-wave mixing. Susceptibility of 3rd order, nonlinear phenomena associated with susceptibility of 3rd order. Third-harmonic generation, the generation of harmonics. Optical Kerr effect. Supercontinuum generation. Content of practicals: Practical derivation, basic math operations useful in nonlinear optics (tensors, some types of differential equations, etc.).

Introduction to lasers, nonlinear optical susceptibility, nonlinear optical processes associated with nonlinear susceptibility the 2nd and 3rd order.
Students intensify their knowledge of optics, optoelectronics, non-linear optics.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Physics III

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

Participation in all exercises. In case of any absences from the exercises, a written test will be required before the exam. Oral exam. In the academic year 2021/2022, lectures will be held in English only.
