Course content
Lectures: 1. (2 hours) Paediatrics as a field. 2. (2 hours) Characteristics of development at infant, toddler and preschool age. Anthropometric data. 3. (2 hours) Preventive paediatrics (vaccination calendar, preventive examinations), development of sleep patterns. 4. (2 hours) Prevention of injuries and poisoning. 5. (2 hours) The most common diseases at infant, toddler and preschool age. 6. (2 hours) Characteristics of the development at school age and in adolescence. 7. (2 hours) Adolescent risk behaviour syndrome. 8. (2 hours) Drug prevention. 9. (2 hours) Social issues in school age children and adolescents (crisis centre for children and family). 10. (2 hours) Psychosomatic diseases at school and adolescent age. Seminars: 1. (2 hours) Psychomotor, psychosocial and cognitive development at infant, toddler and preschool age. 2. (2 hours) Natural feeding of infants, rational nutrition of toddler and preschool child. 3. (2 hours) Hygiene regime. 4. (2 hours) Injuries and poisoning and possibilities of their prevention. 5. (2 hours) Nursing process in hospitalized infants, toddlers and preschool children. 6. (2 hours) Psychomotor, psychosocial and cognitive development at school age and in adolescence. 7. (2 hours) Rational nutrition at school age and in adolescence. 8. (2 hours) Nursing process in children and youth using addictive substances. 9. (2 hours) Health education (sex education, eating, oral care, hygiene). 10. (2 hours) Prevention of injuries and poisoning.

Learning outcomes
The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical unit, which forms the basis for providing quality nursing care in paediatrics. It provides students with a comprehensive view of the growth and development of a healthy child and an ill child with regard to the medical and preventive care provided. The student will be able to identify the specifics of the child's individual needs in connection with pathological conditions, developmental anomalies and childhood diseases. Students will be familiar with standard diagnostic procedures and tests for individual clinical conditions. They will be able to recognize basic pathologies from the beginning of childhood so that they can plan and implement effective nursing care. Goals of the course: " The student will obtain clear and comprehensive information about the physiology and pathology of infants, toddlers and preschool children. " The student will acquire basic knowledge and skills to assess the physical and mental condition and needs of children in given periods. " The student (nurse) will be prepared to provide specialized and highly specialized care to children in accordance with their age and current health and illness needs. " The student will obtain clear and comprehensive information about the physiology and pathology of children of school and adolescent age. " The student will acquire theoretical and practical skills for the implementation of the nursing process in given periods. " The student will acquire basic knowledge and skills to assess the physical and mental condition and needs of children in given periods. " The student (nurse) will be prepared for highly specialized nursing care in selected clinical fields. " The student will obtain clear and comprehensive information on nursing care for children with diseases of individual organ systems. " The student will acquire necessary theoretical knowledge concerning the manifestations of disorders and diseases of individual organ systems and practical skills for the implementation of the nursing process in sick children of all ages. " The student will obtain clear and comprehensive information about nursing care for children with allergic and immunological diseases. " The student will gain theoretical knowledge of immune, allergic and inflammatory responses of the child's organism. " The student will be able to apply this knowledge to the nursing process in children with allergic and immunological diseases.
Acquired competencies: " The student has knowledge of the psychological and ethical approach to a healthy, ill and handicapped child of all age groups within the framework of paediatric care. " The student knows the risks to the healthy development of children. " The student knows ways to prevent their occurrence. " The student has knowledge of the child's psychopathology. " The student knows how to professionally communicate with sick and handicapped children and their parents and loved ones " The student has knowledge of the consequences of unmet needs from social pathology. " The student knows the nursing procedures in dealing with a child in danger, when the CAN syndrome is detected. " The student knows the psychological approaches to a chronically ill child in different age categories. " The student knows the methods of communication with long-term ill, chronically ill and dying children and adolescents. " The student knows the differences in meeting the individual needs of hospitalized children of all ages according to clinical diagnosis. " The student knows the methods and means of providing nutritional needs of children of all ages according to clinical diagnosis - including education of mothers or other caregivers. " The student knows the peculiarities of specialized nursing care for battered, abused, neglected and intoxicated children and adolescents. " The student has knowledge of paediatrics, paediatric propedeutics, social paediatrics, prevention and counselling, and providing a suitable environment for the successful development of children. " The student knows hygienic and legal standards related to the management of nursing care provided to children and adolescents in individual departments according to clinical focus (management of safe environment for children and adolescents). " The student knows special diagnostic examinations, treatment procedures and tests in individual clinical conditions " The student knows the preparation of children for examination, including the current assessment of their health, and detecting deviations from the norm for the purpose of timely medical intervention. " The student is able to perform physical examination of a sick child and adolescent in order to identify early deviations from physiological values. " The student is able to evaluate the condition of a sick child and adolescent and to draw up a plan of nursing care respecting the peculiarities of access to children in different age periods. " The student is able to provide highly specialized nursing care to long-term and chronically ill children of all ages, including the provision of nutrition and possible resuscitation. " The student can communicate with a long-term and chronically ill child and its parents/guardian. " The student respects the ethical rules and the charter of the rights of hospitalized children in everyday care. " The student masters the instrumentation used in the care of long-term and chronically ill children and adolescents. " The student can educate children and their family members to prepare them for specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. " The student knows specialized care for children with GIT. " The student knows the etiopathogenesis of diabetes, clinical manifestations of diabetes and its complications in childhood. " The student knows diagnostics, including examination methods, finding needs and influencing them in relation to the daily activities of children with diabetes mellitus, including prognosis, and knows the principles of treatment of diabetes in childhood. " The student is familiar with specialized care for children with respiratory diseases, cardiological diseases, endocrinological diseases, metabolic diseases, rheumatic diseases, kidney and urinary diseases, and sensory organ diseases. " The student knows the possibilities of providing consulting and advisory services. " The student knows the incidence, causes and manifestations of infectious diseases in childhood.

Credit requirements: 90% attendance in seminars, elaboration of a seminar paper on a given topic and its presentation
