This year the seminar will focus on questions of mimesis and realism in 19th- and 20th-century novels. We will discuss various approach for studying and understanding the relation between reality and the fictional worlds created by 19th and 20th century authors.

This seminar approaches the novel form from a theoretical perspective, exploring how critical theory can illuminate aspects of the genre, and vice versa - how literary works challenge theoretical concepts. The course is taught in English.
Obeznámenost s různými metodologiemi studia románu, jejich přínosy i omezeními. Čtení románů z různých teoretických perspektiv. Znalost klíčových postav z kritiky románu.

Předpoklady
|
Studenti by měli být schopni číst romány a teoretické texty v angličtině. Zároveň se od nich očekává plynulá znalost mluvené angličtiny, slušné schopnosti písemného projevu a zájem o teorii románu.
