Obsah předmětu
The course is organised into four thematic blocks: 1. Scientific articles and principles of scientific writing - main types of scientific articles, including original research papers, review articles, short communications and other common publication formats; - purpose, audience and scientific message of a manuscript; - principles of clear, concise and logically structured scientific writing, including development of a coherent argument from the research question to the main conclusions; - specific structure and principles of writing review articles. 2. Structure and preparation of a scientific manuscript - structure and function of the main sections of an original research paper and their logical interconnections; - relationship between the title, abstract, keywords and the main scientific message; - Introduction: scientific context, knowledge gap, research question and objectives; - Materials and Methods: transparency, reproducibility and appropriate level of detail; - Results: logical organisation and objective presentation of findings; - preparation and integration of tables and figures; - preparation and appropriate use of supplementary materials and supporting data; - Discussion: interpretation of results, comparison with previous knowledge, limitations and biological/scientific significance; - Conclusions and take-home message. 3. Scientific literature and reference management - searching for, selecting and critically using relevant scientific literature; - Web of Science and other scientific literature databases; - appropriate integration of references into scientific text; - citation styles and management of references during manuscript revision; - practical use of reference-management software for organising literature, inserting citations and generating reference lists; - verification of bibliographic information and cited sources. 4. Publication and peer-review process - selection of an appropriate journal and evaluation of journal scope and suitability; - responsible use and interpretation of journal and publication metrics; - preparation of manuscripts according to journal requirements; - manuscript submission and communication with editors and co-authors; - principles and practical functioning of peer review; - revision, editing and improvement of scientific text, including clarity, consistency and removal of unnecessary repetition; - critical evaluation of reviewer comments; - preparation of structured and evidence-based responses to reviewers; - manuscript revision, resubmission and editorial decisions; - practical preparation, peer evaluation and revision of an extended scientific abstract for the joint Book of Abstracts.

Výstupy z učení
The aim of the course is to develop the practical skills required to prepare, write, revise, and publish scientific manuscripts. The course focuses on the logical structure of scientific papers, the formulation of a clear scientific argument, the effective presentation of methods and results, the appropriate use of scientific literature, and the preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Students will gain practical experience with different parts of a scientific manuscript, including titles, abstracts, introductions, methods, results, discussion and conclusions, as well as the effective use of tables and figures. Particular attention is given to reference management, journal selection, manuscript submission, the peer-review process, revision of manuscripts and preparation of responses to reviewers. The course builds on the principles of authorship, citation ethics and responsible publication introduced in Research Ethics and Integrity and focuses on their practical application during scientific writing and publishing. Practical use of reference-management software is covered in this course. Open access, repositories, preprints, and licensing are further developed in Open Science; the broader practical use of artificial intelligence in scientific work is addressed in Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Work; oral and poster presentations are covered in Science Communication and Societal Impact; and the preparation of research proposals is addressed in Grant Proposal Preparation. The course is particularly suitable for doctoral students who have begun generating research results or are preparing their first scientific manuscript.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - understand the structure, purpose and logical organisation of different types of scientific articles; - prepare and revise the main sections of an original scientific manuscript; - search for, select and appropriately integrate scientific literature into academic writing; - use reference-management software for organising literature, citations and reference lists; - select an appropriate journal and understand the main stages of manuscript submission and peer review; - critically evaluate reviewer comments and prepare appropriate responses and manuscript revisions; - prepare a clear and logically structured extended scientific abstract based on their own research.
Předpoklady
Admission to a doctoral study programme. The course is particularly suitable for students who have already defined their research topic and started working with scientific literature or research results. Completion of Research Ethics and Integrity is recommended before taking this course. Students should have access to a laptop with a reference-management program installed, such as Mendeley, Zotero, EndNote, or another comparable tool, for use during practical exercises.

Active participation in lectures, practical exercises and discussions is expected. Students are required to complete assigned preparatory reading and practical tasks related to scientific writing, reference management and the publication process. During the course, students will work with their own research topic or research material whenever possible. Practical assignments will include preparation or revision of selected parts of a scientific manuscript, use and verification of scientific references, and exercises related to manuscript submission and peer review. As a final assignment, each student will prepare an extended scientific abstract based on their own research, structured as a concise version of a scientific manuscript. The contributions will be compiled into a joint Book of Abstracts as a practical publishing exercise. Before the final workshop, students will read and critically evaluate selected contributions prepared by their peers. During the workshop, the abstracts will be discussed with emphasis on scientific logic, clarity, structure, appropriate presentation of results and conclusions, and constructive peer feedback.
