The course is organised into three thematic blocks: 1. Principles of research integrity and responsible scientific conduct - principles of responsible research conduct and scientific integrity; - research misconduct, questionable research practices and honest scientific error; - fabrication, falsification and misrepresentation of research; - authorship and contributorship, responsibilities of authors, collaboration and conflicts of interest; - citation ethics, plagiarism, self-plagiarism and responsible use of scientific sources; - ethical responsibilities in scientific publishing and peer review, including duplicate publication, corrections and retractions. Practical manuscript preparation, management of references and citations using reference-management software, journal selection, submission, and revision are further developed in Academic Writing and Publishing. 2. Integrity of research data and contemporary research practices - integrity of research data, including data selection, inappropriate data manipulation, selective reporting, transparency and reproducibility; - confidentiality, sensitive information and ethical aspects of data sharing; - responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in scientific work; - ethical aspects of open science and sharing of research outputs. Practical data organisation, documentation, storage, backup, protection and long-term preservation are developed further in Research Data Management; open access, repositories, licences and practical data sharing in Open Science; and practical use of AI tools for literature work, analysis, programming, writing and organisation of scientific work in Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Work. 3. Ethics in biological and biomedical research - ethical principles of research involving animals and the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement (3Rs); - animal welfare, scientific justification of animal use, experimental design, pain and distress, refinement and humane endpoints; - ethical approval and responsibilities of researchers; - ethical considerations in field and wildlife research; - analysis and discussion of practical research-ethics and research-integrity cases.

The aim of the course is to provide doctoral students with a practical foundation in responsible research conduct, research ethics and scientific integrity. The course develops the ability to recognise ethical and integrity-related problems arising during research, data analysis, collaboration, authorship, publication and scientific evaluation, and to make responsible decisions in accordance with accepted principles of good research practice. Particular attention is given to ethical issues in biological and biomedical research, including the use of animals in research, animal welfare, ethical approval, work with biological material, and field and wildlife research. The course is intended as the second core introductory soft-skills course for doctoral students, following A Good Start - Introductory Training for Doctoral Students. It establishes the ethical and research-integrity framework underlying other specialised soft-skills courses, including Academic Writing and Publishing, Research Data Management, Open Science, Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Work, and Science Communication and Societal Impact. Practical and technical aspects of these areas are developed in the respective specialised courses.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - understand the basic principles of responsible research conduct and scientific integrity; - recognise research misconduct, questionable research practices and common ethical problems in scientific work; - apply responsible principles to authorship, citation, research data, publication, peer review and the use of artificial intelligence; - understand the basic ethical principles of biological research, including animal welfare, the 3Rs and ethical approval; - recognise ethical issues related to field and wildlife research; - analyse practical research integrity and research ethics cases and justify an appropriate course of action.

Hodnoticí metody a kritéria
|
Analýza výkonů studenta, Rozhovor, Seminární práce
Active participation in lectures, discussions and case-based activities is expected. Students are required to complete the assigned preparatory reading and participate in the analysis of practical cases in research integrity and ethics. As a final assessment, students will complete an individual case-based exercise in which they identify ethical and research-integrity issues in realistic research situations, apply the relevant principles and propose an appropriate course of action. Selected cases and questions raised by students will be discussed during the final workshop.
