The course is organised into four thematic blocks: 1. Principles of effective science communication - identification of the purpose, audience and key message of scientific communication; - adaptation of scientific content for specialist, interdisciplinary and non-specialist audiences; - clear communication of scientific evidence, uncertainty, limitations and conclusions; - principles of effective scientific storytelling and audience engagement; - visual communication and appropriate use of text, figures, images and other supporting materials. 2. Oral presentation of scientific research - structure and preparation of scientific conference presentations; - selection and organisation of information for a limited presentation time; - preparation and design of presentation slides; - effective delivery, voice, pace, body language and interaction with the audience; - presenting data, figures and complex scientific information clearly; - handling questions, discussion and scientific criticism; - practical preparation, delivery and peer evaluation of scientific presentations. 3. Scientific posters and conference communication - purpose and structure of a scientific poster; - organisation and visual hierarchy of poster content; - balance between text, figures, tables and graphical elements; - preparation of a concise scientific message for poster presentation; - interaction with conference participants and effective explanation of research at the poster; - practical preparation and peer evaluation of students' scientific posters. 4. Societal impact and communication beyond academia - scientific impact, societal impact and the distinction between research dissemination, communication and impact; - identification of relevant stakeholders and potential users of research results; - communication of research to the public, professional practice, decision-makers and other non-specialist audiences; - interaction with traditional and digital media and responsible communication in public environments; - adapting scientific messages to different communication formats; - identifying potential pathways through which research may contribute to societal, environmental, economic or professional practice; - practical transformation of the student's own scientific research into a communication format for a non-specialist audience.

Výstupy z učení

The aim of the course is to develop doctoral students' ability to communicate scientific research effectively to different audiences and to understand how research can generate scientific, societal and practical impact. The course combines scientific presentation skills with broader principles of science communication, helping students adapt the same research message to specialist, interdisciplinary and non-specialist audiences. Particular attention is given to the preparation and delivery of oral scientific presentations, scientific posters, visual communication and discussion at conferences. Students will also develop practical skills in communicating research to the public, the media, professional practice, and other relevant stakeholder groups, including the appropriate communication of uncertainty, limitations, and scientific evidence. The course builds on the scientific writing skills developed in Academic Writing and Publishing and focuses on transforming scientific writing into effective oral, visual, and audience-specific communication. It also introduces the principles of identifying the potential societal relevance and impact of research. The course is suitable for doctoral students at any stage of their studies, but is particularly useful for students preparing to present their research at scientific conferences or communicate their work beyond their immediate scientific field.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - adapt scientific information to specialist, interdisciplinary and non-specialist audiences; - prepare and deliver a clear and logically structured scientific oral presentation; - design and present an effective scientific poster; - communicate scientific data, uncertainty, limitations and conclusions appropriately; - respond to questions and participate effectively in scientific discussion; - identify relevant stakeholders and potential pathways of societal or practical impact; - transform their own research into an appropriate communication format for a non-specialist audience.

Předpoklady
|
Admission to a doctoral study programme. The course is suitable for doctoral students at any stage of their studies. Completion of Academic Writing and Publishing is recommended before taking this course, particularly for students who will use their own research outputs as the basis for oral, poster and non-specialist communication exercises. Students should have access to a laptop with standard presentation software for practical exercises. No additional disciplinary prerequisites are required.

Analýza výkonů studenta, Rozhovor, Sebereflexe
Active participation in lectures, practical exercises, discussions and presentation workshops is expected. Students are required to complete assigned preparatory tasks and actively participate in peer feedback and discussion. During the course, students will prepare communication outputs based on their own research whenever possible. Practical assignments will include preparation of a scientific oral presentation, a scientific poster, and adaptation of the same research message for a non-specialist audience. As a final practical exercise, students will present their research at a joint student conference/workshop and participate in evaluating and discussing presentations prepared by their peers.
