The subject focuses on social work as a human rights profession in the context of civil society. Based on the etymology of core terms (democracy, open society, civil society, and democratic capitalism), the subject develops the recognition that democratic, open society is an important context for the praxis and development of social work. In addition, with regard to the Czech experience with the transformation from a totalitarian society to a democratic one and the related double ban on social work (1939-1945 and 1948-1989), this reveals the subject of democracy as an important value of social work. On these fundaments, the subject focuses on the praxis of social work as a human rights profession, concentrating on supporting and defending democracy as part of social work with society. - Students understand the constitutive relationship between democracy and social work. - Students understand the concepts of open society (Karl Popper) and democratic capitalism (Michael Novak) and their differences from competing social concepts (e.g., Marxism, corporatism, social conservatism, etc.). - Students know the role and importance of social work in shaping a democratic, open society. - Students understand the concept of social work as a human rights profession and can apply it to helping practice. - Students understand the concept of social work with society and can apply it in practice.
