Course content
The course is focused on understanding the principles and especially on the application of statistical methods and the correct interpretation of the results of statistical tests. The graduate of the course will be prepared to process data for the purposes of their own work and correctly interpret the results of tests, and will understand the importance of statistical evaluations, which occur in virtually all professional articles in contemporary biology. Students will learn to process data using the statistical package STATISTICA. Content of lectures: Basic concepts, deductive and inductive reasoning, general scientific method, confirmatory data analysis. Basic file and selection, descriptive statistics. Analysis of categorical data, principles of hypothesis testing. Analysis of continuous data classified into groups (t-test, ANOVA). Relationship between two quantitative variables, regression and correlation. Poisson distribution, binomial distribution and their use. Methods of multidimensional statistics and their use. Nonparametric methods are always discussed with the relevant parametric methods.

Learning activities and teaching methods

  • Preparation for exam - 50 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 56 hours per semester
  • Preparation for classes - 50 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint doctoral students with the principles of statistical reasoning and their application to biological problems.
The student can independently navigate in the given issue and is able to use the acquired knowledge in their scientific activities or other practice.
Prerequisites
The student is familiar with the issues within the scope of university studies and is willing to study independently.
