Course content
Content of lectures: 1. Chemical structure and geometry 2. Conformation and energy 3. Structure of proteins and nucleic acids 4. Structure of polysaccharides and biological membranes 5. Calculation methods and molecular modeling 6. Preparation of samples of biomacromolecules, sequencing, isolation, purification, synthesis 7. X-ray crystallography 8. Nuclear magnetic resonance 9. Electron microscopy 10. Mass spectroscopy 11. Optical microscopy and CD 12. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy 13. Bioinformatics Content of practicals: During the course the knowledge gained during the lectures will be enhanced.

Learning outcomes
The lectures will explain why the knowledge of molecular structure is important for the precise understanding of the of macromolecular structures function. A breakthrough in modern biochemistry has occurred with the development of techniques to determine the structure of macromolecules (XRD, NMR, EM), and it is currently common place that students use structural models of proteins and nucleic acids available in computer databases for their work where the representation of biological macromolecules is very clear, but often idealized. This is why students of modern biochemistry should at least familiarize themselves with methods of structural analysis during their studies so as to be able to distinguish between what has been measured and what is calculated, what is reality and what fiction, when looking at the structure of the database.
Students will acquire theoretical knowledge of functional and structural biochemistry as well as practical skills involving the use of various methodological procedures and the use of many modern instrumental methods in the study of the structure and function of living organisms at the molecular level.
The minimum requirement for students is basic knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry acquired after completing university education of biological, chemical or biochemical specialization.

The requirement for successful completion of the course is the active participation of students in lectures and seminars. The final exam will take the form of a written test and a subsequent oral interview with the final evaluation in the form of awarding the mark.
