The student will examine two novels, The Great Gatsby (1925), a masterpiece set in New York, with a contemporary novel The Sun King (1999) set in Washington, D.C. These novels share a focus on the American Dream motif. Both novels focus on men of great power and allure set in major cities in the United States. The nature of that power and allure is the focus of the analysis which will consist in comparing and contrasting the characters and the overall "spirit of the times" as depicted in each novel. A conclusion will be drawn on how achievable (or illusionary) the American Dream is, as presented by each novelist.
