Student má nejprve za úkol stručně představí literární hnutí, během kterých oba autoři píší, Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 - 1896) a Upton Sinclair (1878 - 1968), jejich motivaci a období, ve kterém psali. Dále pak bude provedena analýza dvou románů, jejich postav a děje. Nejdůležitějším bodem práce bude však analýza historického dopadu na Americkou společnost a jakým způsobem byli romány přijaty.

Research Plan
The student will analyze two novels of the historical significance, one by a woman who penned a melodramatic novel with didactic and religious undertones and another later work by a male muckraking journalist/novelist from the school of naturalism. These different authors share a focus on characters (black slaves and immigrants) who were victims of social injustice in different eras of U.S. history. The student will write a brief introduction describing the historical and social setting of both novels as well as the way the characters were regarded in American society, considering politics, culture and social status they held (at their respective periods in history). Regarded as inferior people, the characters often had to endure hardship and humiliation. The student will engage in a theme common to both novelists but also point out their different perspectives regarding narrative style and indicate which work succeeds in engaging the reader of today more powerfully, i.e., offering her view of the both positive and negative aspects of their writing. Beecher Stowe was said to have played a role through her novel of starting the Civil War. Sinclair's novel caused a new law to be passed, the "Pure Food and Drug Act" in 1906.
